“Hawes Townscape” by Clare Tyas the artist
Inspired by the beautiful market towns and landscapes in the Yorkshire Dales and Cumbria.
Clare has turned her artists eye onto the buildings, streets and landmarks that make the daily life of these towns. Clare creates her own unique portraits, naming these “Townscapes”
The paintings intention is to capture the “real life of Hawes, the winding cobble streets, the familiar traditional shops and market life.
Clare’s wish is for people to enjoy travelling through the painting of Hawes and trying to locate local landmarks, quirky characters and the architectural angles of Hawes.
Building up a painting, creating a “Townscape”
The painting begins with hundreds of photos and sketches of the town, captured from many angles and positions.
The whole town is drawn out firstly in pencil, placing the buildings and streets together like pieces of a jigsaw.
Clare then applies watercolour layers to achieve the desired rich effect. Finishing with a fine ink pen to highlight its highly detailed design. This whole process from start to finish takes over 4 months.
